May 20th - Algonquin, a day in the park

The group split in half today with Kenny, Bob and Thelma going fishing in a rented boat and myself, Wendy and DeeAnne going into the park to find as much wildlife as we could. As I write this the fishing group have not yet returned, so I am unable to report on their success. We have had the most wonderful day of driving through the park and then taking a lovely walk around Peck Lake. I thought rather than going into too much detail I would just post photos each with a brief explanation.

Outside our motel in the garden was this pretty little squirrel.

We had to come to a halt to let this wild turkey walk, then run, across the road...

We had stopped to look at this beaver's den when Wendy saw this swallowtail butterfly on the road.

...and then we saw our first beaver, swimming towards another den.

Our walk around Peck Lake gave us our first chance to see the Common Loon. It is the most beautiful bird. The two we saw on the lake seemed always to be too far away to photo, but then they came a bit closer and we took this long range photo.

Peck Lake, yet another beautiful unspoiled lake in Ontario!

After Peck Lake we took a gravel road down to Arowhon Lake. The road went through some stunningly beautiful woods and we drove past this large beaver dam. Beavers are the most incredible builders!

As we approached the main highway again we saw some cars parked by the road and people looking across the road at this moose. We couldn't get any closer to take photos. The first picture is Wendy's and mine is the moose's rear end as it ran off into the wood!!

I noticed the Satnav was showing another milestone as we drove back to our motel.

Tomorrow we leave Algonquin and drive about 250 kms more or less due south to Toronto. On the way we intend to look at Deerhurst Resort where the G8 Summit will be held.
