May 24th - Ottawa to Montreal

If anyone ever tells you that Ottawa is not worth visiting, then do not believe them!!

One night in the capital city simply was nowhere near long enough for us to take in everything that this great city has to offer. Stunning architecture, wonderful scenery and history, combine to make this a truly impressive place that we have high on our list of places we MUST come back to. Rather than give a detailed description of our day, I thought a photo album of our day touring the city would be the best way to show Ottawa at her best. So here goes, starting with the Reconciliation Monument with the silver spires of the Basilica of Notre Dame behind.

The Basilica of Notre Dame

The National Gallery with the giant spider sculpture by Louise Bourgeois

The monumental architecture of the interior of the National Gallery....

....and then a complete contrast in an interior atrium, a haven of quiet and solitude.

On the opposite bank of the Ottawa River from the Parliament Buildings is the stunning Museum of Civilization.

Looking across to the Parliament buildings with the museum main building on the right.

What great views!!

More views showing the amazing architecture of the museum. The stonework reminded us of the travertine stone used on the Getty Centre in Los Angeles.

Two views of the vast interior. The first an exhibition hall showing a collection of totem poles and the second a display in the entrance hall of a dog sledge team.

With time getting on we left the museum at around 3pm for the 200 kms drive to Montreal. As we left Ottawa we promised ourselves that we would return to this great city.

We reached Montreal at around 5pm having driven on the main freeway that runs from Ottawa. As we were driving into the city I noticed that we have now driven just 20 kms short of 7,000 kms. It's looking likely that we will exceed 8,000 kms (5,000 miles) for the whole journey by the time we reach Halifax. We were greeted by Kenny and DeeAnne who had arrived about an hour earlier. Shortly after, Bob and Thelma checked in to the hotel having taken the 'back' roads, which included a ferry across the Ottawa River.

We stay here for two nights and then head north-east to Quebec City.

Our ninth adventure drive, this time from Salt Spring Island, Vancouver Island in the west of Canada, to Halifax, Nova Scotia, in the east, with an approximate distance of 5,000 miles.
